was at anfield in 1963 as a 15 yo - when we won 2-1, our last win there until 2015 under bilic. 2 goals up at half time thru Hurst and Peters, Standen saved a penalty from ronnie moran around the hour mark. Roger Hunt pulled one back but we held on and returned to london victorious and unscathed. Those were the days.

Are you the actual Martin Britt I saw score a hat trick c1967 I think against Sheff Wed?

Re: Happy Birthday Jim Standen
Sadly not - greatest moment was seeing him score 4 goals in the 1963 youth cup fina 2nd leg that saw the hammers overturn a 3-1 first leg deficit by winning the second leg 5-2 with the winner coming two minutes from time. A saturday night at Upton Park with some 13/16,000 present. He was sold to Blackburn and a serious knee injury curtailed his career. Believe he became a publican in the Leigh-on-sea area.

Martin Britt
I was at that game one of the best games I've seen at Upton Park one of Britt's goals he barged the goalkeeper over the line
17,000 were there on cup final day I think Man Utd beat Leicester earlier on

Re: Happy Birthday Jim Standen
You've got it in one - MU 3 Leics 1 - the goalkeeper barge was just retribution for the way that Tommy Smith kicked the shit out of Sissons in the first leg . One of the best nights at UP along with the 7-0 over Leeds and all those great 60's and 70's European games.

My first footballing hero - well, my second, the first was Lawrie Leslie but I was a bit fickle when I was 10.
I remember a game, against Liverpool I think, when he kept them out virtually single-handed, and at the end both teams applauded him off the field. At one time, I began to wonder whether that had actually happened, but someone else remembered it in exactly the same way.

I hear Lawrie Leslie is in a care home at the moment. Not been well for some years now.

Re: Happy Birthday Jim Standen
Ron Greenwood signed him from his old club Arsenal’s reserves as I recall. He was a very solid, if unspectacular goalkeeper.

always remember a 3-3 draw with arsenal in april 1962. Leslie who was sometimes too brave for his own good, was taken off after diving at a forwards feet. He broke his arm - but came back on with his arm in a sling - pre substitutes remember. He played at outside right and gave the arsenal left back all he could handle. bobby moore took his place in goal, lawrie was a tough guy and really popular at UP.
